General Information.

France

JCR doesn't offer live out placements. All placements with a family are live in.

Non-European citizens cannot work in France as mother's helps or qualified nannies. Applicants with an EU passport and if suitably experienced or qualified are in a position where JCR can negotiate a placement as a nanny or mother's help.

Au pair applicants [no EU passport] with in depth experience or qualifications are in a position where JCR can negotiate a rate above the minimum of Euro 80.

On the au pair visa attendance at language classes is compulsory.  The fees for these classes are around Euro 46 - 76 per month which the applicant is responsible for out of the amount they are paid.  If you endear yourself to the host family it is possible to negotiate with the host family to pay towards the language school fees.

Going to French classes is optional for holders of a Working Holiday Visa or EU passport, however, unless you speak some French it is advisable to go to some lessons.
Families will want you to speak English to their children. If requested, the host parents will speak French to the au pair to help them learn the language. We suggest that all applicants have at least 200 words of basic French before they leave especially if you have no or very little knowledge of French. Knowing some vocabulary will help you to settle in. There are many good books, CDs and internet sites to learn from. Try: www.rosettastone.com

The au pair visa to France can take between 12- 16  weeks to be finalised from the time of placement with a host family. Please be prepared for the wait.

The W H Visa takes about 4 weeks to issue from time of applying. The Consulate requires proof of AU$3800 available to you before the working holiday visa will be issued.
You have to provide your own health insurance cover with this visa.
Only Australian, New Zealand, South Korean, Canadian and Japanese passport holders may apply for the 12 month Working Holiday visa to France.

Please note that for either visa Australian applicants do have to go to the Sydney consulate, by appointment, to be biometrically fingerprinted and photographed prior to submitting your visa application. Applicants from any other country go to your main consulate.

Apply for this country 6 months in advance of when you wish to go if applying for the au pair visa and 4 months in advance if applying for the WH Visa.

France is well placed to visit Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, and the UK by ferry over the English Channel or train under the Channel.

The amount paid to you is pocket money and should be accepted as that. Should you wish to travel in Europe, take additional money with you or a credit/debit card.

There is always a demand for aupairs and those with a qualification are highly valued. Families will give preference to applicants with the JCR certificate. Obtain your aupair certificate now through the on-line JCR Aupair course. Benefit by being given priority placement.
