AU PAIR GENERAL INFORMATION

Unless you already speak Japanese or have a very good working knowledge of the language, maybe having learned the language in high school or tertiary education, you are required to attend Japanese language classes.

Au pairs will, of course, hear Japanese spoken all around them and they can ask the host parents to speak to you in basic Japanese so that you learn quickly.  By the end of your GAP YEAR you could be speaking Japanese really well if not fluently.

We suggest that all applicants have at least 200 words of basic Japanese before they leave especially if they haveJapan not studied Japanese in either high school or at tertiary level.
Knowing some vocabulary will help you to settle in.
There are many good books, CDs and internet sites to learn from. Try www.rosettastone.com

The Working Holiday visa to Japan takes about 1 week to be issued. You will have to show the Japanese consulate that you have an amount of AU$2500 available to you to maintain yourself initially.  Further information and how to apply will be provided.

Apply for this country 4 months in advance of when you wish to go

The amount paid to you is pocket money and should be accepted as that. Should you wish to travel in Japan, take additional money with you or a credit/debit card.
